Victory with strong Hankook performance: Mitch Evans wins the Monaco E-Prix

Seoul, Korea, April 29, 2024 – The principality of Monaco hosted race eight of the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The 3.337-kilometer track around the harbor and through the narrow streets of the glamorous city-state on the Mediterranean is one of the highlights of the World Championship calendar. In unsettled but dry conditions, with temperatures around 17 degrees Celsius, the 22 drivers once again put on a great show for the fans around the circuit, creating a superb advertisement for the fully electric series. Despite the many corners and narrow sections, there were still many changes of position to delight the crowds. At the end of a superb race, Jaguar driver Mitch Evans from New Zealand emerged as the delighted winner. The 29-year-old took full advantage of the strong performance of the Hankook iON Race, using the high grip levels to hold off his rivals and claim the eleventh victory of his Formula E career. Teammate and compatriot Nick Cassidy followed in second place ahead of Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne (DS Penske).

As the Formula E season reaches the halfway point, Germany's Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team) tops the table with 102 points. His closest rivals are second-placed Cassidy with 95 points, and Jake Dennis (GB/Andretti Formula E) in third with 98 points.

Fans were treated to another highlight ahead of the Monaco E-Prix. Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard took the new Gen3 Evo out for a spin, giving the fans their first glimpse of the new car for Season 11 at a show run.

Manfred Sandbichler, Hankook Motorsport Director: “The race in Monaco is definitely one of the highlights on the calendar of the Formula E World Championship. The special flair and amazing atmosphere of the principality were apparent in the pit lane, and we obviously felt it too. Rarely has the Hankook iON Race been surrounded by so much glamour. The circuit, with 19 different corners, uphill and downhill sections, different surfaces, and some serious banking in the tunnel, really put our tire to the test. However, the tire’s great versatility and ability to adapt to the most diverse conditions, and to support the drivers with maximum performance and consistency right through to the end of the race, was again clear for all to see on the narrow streets of Monaco.”

It is the fastest Formula E car ever. The new Gen3 Evo, which will be run in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as of next season, was officially presented prior to the Monaco E-Prix. Its incredible acceleration on the Hankook iON Race sees the new car do 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.86 seconds! That means the new racer accelerates roughly 30 percent faster than a current Formula 1 car. The top speed is a whopping 320 km/h.

Manfred Sandbichler, Hankook Motorsport Director: “We have optimized our Hankook iON Race and, in doing so, have gained between five and ten percent more performance. Together with all the other changes, this gives the driver even better feedback. We are also proud that the tire is even more sustainable than its predecessor. It is now made of 35 percent recycled and sustainable materials.”

The Gen3 Evo, featuring a host of technical upgrades and a modified chassis, was unveiled in the private automobile museum of Prince Albert II. As well as visual changes and less aerodynamic drag, there have also been some technical modifications. For the first time, the car has four-wheel drive. The front motors are no longer used solely for regeneration, but also for acceleration. Four-wheel drive is activated during the qualifying duels, at the race start, and in Attack Mode. “The Gen3 Evo introduces a pioneering chapter in the evolution of Formula E and embodies our commitment to innovation and high performance, achieved sustainably,” said Formula E boss Jeff Dodds.

The extraordinary Monaco circuit, the modified Hankook iON Race on the Gen3 Evo, and special guest Nico Müller from the ABT Cupra Formula E Team aroused plenty of interest at the Meet the Hankook Team event in the Mediterranean principality. More than 15 international journalists from Argentina, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Monaco, and Slovenia attended Hankook’s popular media session. Nico Müller was extremely happy with the Formula E tire and made it clear that the Hankook iON Race performs very strongly and provides great consistency.

Two high-ranking members of Hankook Europe took the opportunity to watch the highlight of the Formula E season in Monaco live. Sanghoon Lee (President & COO, Hankook Tire Europe) and Jang Hyuk Moon (VP of Marketing, Hankook Tire Europe) attended the eighth race of the season and also paid a flying visit to the whole Hankook team. The highlight of the visit was the Grid Walk prior to the race.

On the starting grid, Hankook Tire Europe President & COO Sanghoon Lee and Hankook Motorsport Director Manfred Sandbichler also met Formula E boss Jeff Dodds, among others.

Three-time Le Mans winner and Hankook brand ambassador Benoît Tréluyer, who was heavily involved in the development of the Hankook iON Race, was also at the circuit in Monaco to check out the performance of the Hankook iON Race for himself. “The atmosphere in Monaco is always very good and it is a pleasure for everyone to be here. Many drivers live here and I think it feels strange for many of them to be racing where they usually go to buy their croissants and pain au chocolat. The new Gen3 Evo is class. I like the design of the car. It has more downforce and the new, optimized Hankook iON Race provides an even better grip. That will change the strategy of most teams a little. I expect a very interesting Season 11.”

The DS Penske team’s Gen3 car was dressed appropriately for the big occasion in the principality of Monaco. The elegance and glamour of Monaco were reflected in the special livery, with shiny black and the characteristic chrome gold. The slender lines and dynamic curves of the paint job are reminiscent of the streamlined look of the golden era of art déco and motorsport from the 1920s and 1930s and are intended to give a feeling of flowing movement, even when the car is stationary.
